Is the material in The Complete Hawaiian Reef Fish Coloring Book too advanced for my toddler?
We do not expect your toddler to learn the reproductive strategies of the Wrasses, but your toddler’s brain is developing at an astonishing rate. Show the pictures of the fish to your toddler while saying the fish’s names. Do this on a regular basis. You may be surprised to find that they will learn to identify the different fishes in the book. Never force and never test them, they can recognize the fish even if they cannot say their names.
You say this book has been tested in grades K-12, but what grade level is it really appropriate for?
As mentioned above, we don’t expect your toddler to learn the reproductive strategies of the Wrasses, but K-3 can learn the names of the fishes and color them in, especially if you take the time to read to them. Middle school students are capable of learning all the material in this book, yet it is not too easy for high school students if they have not learned about these topics before. Coloring adds a multisensory component to learning that can enhance memorization and learning, it acts as the “doing” or kinesthetic component that reinforces learning. So yes, it can be fun for all ages.
